Questions and Answers

What will I learn on the foundation course?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is traditionally taught and practised in what we call Mysore Style, which means you come into the class at any time between the 2.5hour slot, roll out your mat and practise everything you have been taught.

Learning a self practice method is important because our bodies and personalities are different and although each of us follow the same sequence, the speed at which we learn and how our bodies responds varies. With a self practice yoga becomes your personal practice rather than a struggle in a big class. As teachers this is also useful for us because we can give you the personal attention you need in a class setting without disruption to the whole group. You also “have” a yoga practice for ever and are not reliant anyone else to provide you with one.

The foundation course will give you the grounding of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. You will learn three principles embedded into your sequence which are breath, your connection to earth in each pose and energetic flow in the body. The basic postures will prepare your body to become stronger, more flexible and your mind to be focused. Once you have been taught these postures you will be able to attend regularly and as we see your progress we will add on to your sequence by teaching you new postures.

When shall I arrive?

The course will start promptly so we advise you to arrive 10min early especially on the first day so that you can find the venue, have time to settle and meet your fellow students. We are open from 6.30-10am Mon-Fri, you are welcome to arrive early on your course date and meditate or relax in the space.

How often should I be practising after the foundation course?

Traditionally students practise 6 days a week which may take a while for you to build up to. We recommend that you do minimum of 3 days a week to see the benefits and require this as a commitment from you. The beauty of self practice is that once you have done the Foundation Course you can begin to practise at home or anywhere you travel.

What shall I wear?

There isn’t anything so special in what you need to wear as long as it is comfortable. A typical example would be whatever you may wear to gym or go out jogging in. But be prepared to sweat because a bi-product of ashtanga yoga is agni (internal heat) that will allow the transformation to take place. You will need to take your socks off when you practise to have a better connection on your mat, not to slip but also because you will be holding your toes in certain poses.

Do I need to bring my own yoga mat?

We will provide you with yoga mats in the studio, however some people prefer to bring their own mats, or at least they bring a cotton mat to put on top of the sticky mats.
